What is a Municipal Election?

A Municipal election refers to the process by which town officials are elected. Municipal elections are held every two years on the first Tuesday that falls after the first Monday of the month.


When is the next Municipal Election?

The next Municipal Election will be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2011.


Who can vote in the Southbury Municipal Election?

To vote in the local election a person must be:

  • A resident of Southbury
  • 18 years of age or older
  • An American Citizen
  • Registered to Vote

You must register in order to vote. Please visit the Registrar of Voters at Town Hall for information and instructions on how to register. Their address is:

Mail-In Voter Registration Forms can also be downloaded here from the State website. Make sure all boxes are filled out. Once it is completed, it can be mailed to the Registrar of Voters.


Where I can vote?

Southbury is divided into 5 polling sites. Voters in Districts 1-4 are in Assembly District 69 and voters in District 5 are in the 131st Assembly District. Voters must vote in their assigned district. To find your voting district and a polling location please visit this Registrar of Voters’ website.


Can I vote by Absentee Ballot?

Yes and it is advised to start the process early. You will need to fill in Absentee Ballot Application first. Please visit Registrar of Voters at Town Hall or go to their website for information on absentee ballots.


Democratic Caucus Voting Information


What is a Caucus?

A meeting of the members of a legislative body who are members of a particular political party, to select candidates or decide policy. The candidate with the most votes at the Caucus is the party-endorsed candidate.


Who can vote in the Democratic Caucus?

Party affiliation is required for Primaries and Caucus in Connecticut. Any Democrat registered to vote in Southbury can vote in the Caucus. Remember to bring photo ID so your voter registration can be verified.


When and where is the Democratic Caucus held?

The Democratic Caucus will be held on Tuesday, July 26th at 7:30 pm at Southbury Town Hall, Room 205.


Can I vote by Absentee Ballot?

No. There are no absentee ballots to vote in the Caucus.


I am registered as an Unaffiliated Voter. Can I change my voter registration to Democratic so I can vote?

Yes. Unaffiliated voters can change their registration up to July 25th, 2011, 4pm. Please visit Registrar of Voters at Town Hall for information and fill in Voter Registration form.

I am registered as member of a different political party. Can I change my voter registration to Democratic so I can vote?

The rules are that you must change from one political party to another at least 90 days prior to the Primary or Caucus in which you are voting. So, unfortunately, the deadline has passed and you will not be able to vote in the Democratic Caucus on July 26th.
