The two candidates for first selectman Wednesday traded opinions on Southbury Corporate Park, spending, helping businesses and improving energy efficiency in their third and final debate before the election.

First Selectman H. William Davis Jr., the Republican incumbent, reiterated his opposition to raising taxes, and said he knows residents are under “tremendous financial pressure.”

“I’m a taxpayer too, and I can’t afford more taxes,” he said. Davis said he has cut spending for all town services close to $600,000 since he took office in 2008.

A Republican-American review of town budgets since 2008 showed the spending cut occurred in Davis’ first budget, approved in May 2009.

Since then, municipal spending has risen by nearly $50,000. Taxes in the three budgets approved during Davis’ tenure have increased 2.3 percent, including a half-percent drop this year.

Democratic challenger Ed Edelson released a study that showed just the operating portion of the budget — everything other than capital purchases, vehicle replacement, reserve account funding, debt service and road construction — has increased $1.25 million in Davis’ three budgets.
