April 10, 2012

Dear Editor

Mr. Edelson, Southbury’s First Selectman, is damned because he does; use his office for communicating, that is. Unlike his predecessor, Ed includes in his list of First Selectman responsibilities the role of welcomer-in-chief. He’s good at it and, heaven knows, it’s refreshing. New voters can always benefit from being acknowledged. But it looks like Selectman Chad Landmon has taken on the self appointed role of spoiler-in-chief. He claims that sending out welcoming letters to the newly registered is being political and thus inappropriate.

So, is it political to send a letter? Yes. But is it inappropriate? Of course not. Why? Because voting is political. Perhaps Mr. Landmon would prefer that all public servants first swear off their party affiliations as soon as they are elected before communicating with citizens. We all remember the caucus killing, exclusionary activities of the Southbury Republican Town Committee last election. Perhaps being welcoming is not a natural response on the Republican side of town.

How is it possible to fault someone for thanking them for taking up their civic responsibility and registering to vote and then asking them the really important item of considering becoming a volunteer? It’s not like Mr. Edelson is telling them “thanks for registering but I’d really wish you would consider changing your party affiliation to Democrat and you, new Republicans, don’t even think of running for office.” Now that would be a story.

I think that Mr. Landmon needs to get over the fact that his party lost control of town hall. He looks petty and petulant.

Sincerely,

Drew Morten

On Monday, March 19, 2012, the Southbury Democratic Town Committee elected a new slate of officers. Meghan Forgione, was selected to head the DTC as Town Chairwoman. Forgione, 24, of Southbury seeks to strengthen the energy and momentum for Democrats in Southbury that, most recently, helped to elect Ed Edelson as the First Selectman of the town, as well as the members of the Board of Selectmen and Board of Education.

In his nomination statement on behalf of Forgione, Selectman Ron Pugliese commented on Ms. Forgione’s remarkable history of volunteerism. He noted that “Meghan represents the kind of person that typifies what Southbury Democrats are all about. She will provide an excellent transition of leadership to a new generation of Democrats in our community.”

Outgoing Chairman Drew Morten commented that “I can’t imagine a better choice for Chair. Our committee truly represents a broad cross section of Southbury and we will continue to focus on helping the town expand its pool of well qualified and energetic volunteers.”

Forgione is joined by newly elected and former Vice Chair, Ken Kerin, Secretary, Ginny Middleton and Treasurer, Kris Nanavaty.

On Monday, March 19, 2012, the Southbury Democratic Town Committee met to decide which candidates to support for the open seats in the 5th U.S. Congressional District and the U.S. Senate.

The DTC endorsed Dan Roberti for U.S. Congress and U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy (D-5) for U.S. Senate. Meghan Forgione, newly elected Town Chairwoman, stated that “Chris Murphy is the strongest candidate running for U.S. Senate, he has never let his constituents down while representing the 5th District and has proven that there is no substitue for hard work when it comes to leadership. The DTC is confident in his ability to represent and provide a powerful voice in Washington for the people of Connecticut.”

Commenting on the endorsement of Roberti, DTC member Vivian Templeton said, “Dan has been in Southbury from the very beginning. He was the first one to offer help and support to us during our campaign for First Selectman. He is bright and a hard worker.”

Roberti said he was delighted to receive the endorsement of the Southbury Democratic Town Committee. “The support of the DTC will help keep the focus of the race on the issues that most concern people in the 5th District: jobs and the economy, affordable health care, and upholding our promises to our seniors,” he said. “I thank the committee for its endorsement.”

Something remarkable happened at the Southbury Town Meeting. We were there to vote on whether to spend funds to clean up downed and damaged trees on Town right of ways. We discussed issues that concerned those who agreed with paying for removal and those who wanted to take another path. Almost as important, the discussion was forthright, yet respectful and the process was well orchestrated. Some noted that a dangerous situation exits, especially if a hanging limb, “widow maker”, were to fall on a passing car or pedestrian or if loose branches blew into the road and forced a car into oncoming traffic. I must say I was warmed to hear applause after those testifying in favor of spending funds made the argument that it was the right thing to do. Of course, we really had no choice but approve getting the work done even though some wanted to micromanage the process. But then why do we have elected officials to do that detail work and make recommendations?

It was said more than once last night that people move here because Southbury it is a nice place to live and that helping each other is part of what makes it that way. Even if a conniving few take advantage of the situation and drag branches from inside their property to the right of way we must still clean up the mess.

Sadly, there were a few who did not seem to be able to see the forest for the trees. Right thing to do? Bah! Humbug! To you I say sometimes living in a community means that occasionally one group needs help and another and has to bear part of the burden of doing it as well.

Nevertheless, I salute everyone who turned out and spoke their piece and stayed to vote.

Drew Morten, Chair
Southbury Democratic Town Committee
