Southbury Democrats Urge "Yes" Vote The Democratic Town Committee of Southbury, along with the Heritage Village Democratic Club and the Women's Democratic Club of Southbury, strongly urge the voters of Southbury to vote "Yes" on December 6th in support of the school construction program. There is no doubt that a need exists for additional space for our school system in order to properly educate our children. The Building Committee of the Board of Education has put together a good plan that provides for costs of new construction and renovations (per square foot) that are below state guidelines for school construction. The plan calls for basic, no-frills construction. To delay this plan will result in higher costs and higher taxes in the future. Alternative proposals have been made to utilize modular classrooms, keep the schools open year round, offer split sessions and enroll some students in independent college-level courses at a cost of $395 each. These proposals are temporary, at best, and avoid the real issue - the need for more space, which may well increase with time. Over the past months this school construction program has been reported fully in the media and at community meetings conducted by Interim Superintendent of Schools K. Michael Hibbard, PhD. The Democratic Town Committee of Southbury believes the case for passage of the school construction program has been made successfully and deserves a "Yes" vote from the citizens of Southbury. |
