Our Guiding Principle

The Southbury Democratic Town Committee upholds the principle that public service must rise above that of self-service.

 Our Mission

We are committed to maintaining a balance between progressive attitudes and small town atmosphere by identifying and promoting leadership that advances our Guiding Principle and our Vision.

 Our Vision

We believe that Southbury achieves greatness when our leaders and our community at large are committed to:

Environmental Stewardship - sustaining the balance between the beauty and environmental health of a rural community and the convenience of suburban life.

Intelligent Growth - development, in any fashion, should be consistent with the existing character of Southbury.

Competence in Leadership - our local government cherishes the attitudes of professionalism, openness and decisiveness with a focus on the future.

 Our Goals

To achieve our mission and vision the Southbury Democratic Town Committee commits to the following:

 Our Quality of Life

No community is complete without robust programs and well-designed & maintained sites for recreation. We call for continued improvement of our parks and waterways cognizant of the need to keep within the constraints of a prudent operating budget.

Our neighbors in need must not be left behind. We call for strong services to assist them through the Food Bank, Fuel Bank, Needy Fund and the Community Concern Fund.

Our Environment

No community is healthy without competent protection of its water resources including the natural environment and the sources of its drinking water. We support programs that address protection and preservation of the Pomperaug River Watershed.

Our commitment to proactive acquisition and protection of open space must be enhanced. We call for the revitalization of the efforts done by the Rural Preservation Advisory Committee (RUPAC).

We support policies and programs that sustain our agricultural community, especially those that regenerate and sustain the land and enhance the beauty of the town.

 Our Families

The health of Southbury is tied to addressing the needs of our youth and young adults. We support strong and ongoing programs for youth and family.

The Democratic Town Committee celebrates the concept of volunteerism. We believe that both individuals and families should be given every opportunity to participate in programs that enhance community spirit and personal growth. We support the efforts of existing volunteer groups and encourage the formation of new programs.

 Our Education

Since quality education is fundamental to a vital community, we commit to programs and policies that create the highest standards for education in Southbury public schools. Funding of these programs must include an increase in proportionate sharing of costs by the State.

Southbury must be a leader in Connecticut in preparing its students to make valuable contributions to a skilled and competitive work force.

 Our Seniors

We recognize that the foundation of our local heritage is made stronger with seniors who are able to participate, without restriction, in community events. We support programs that provide easy access to cultural activities and life long learning.

 Our Fiscal Responsibility

No community will survive if its population cannot afford the cost to live there. We believe that budgeting for Southbury services should be sensitive to and consistent with our residents’ ability to pay.

Our Town Operations

We insist on an open and transparent government.

We believe our Town must strive to be unsurpassed in the quality of its services. The Democratic Town Committee calls on Southbury to enhance its Web Site to offer residents an opportunity to have immediate access to documentation of Town government events and activities.

We believe that Southbury government must be forward thinking. The future needs of our community should be continually evaluated and addressed with well-designed services and programs.

Our Town employees are a critical force for making Southbury a quality place to live. We call for the development of programs that enhance the recruitment, retention and training of a motivated workforce.

Our First Selectman must be held to exacting standards of leadership and thus be seen as a leader who is envied by our neighboring communities.

 Our Infrastructure

Our infrastructure must be kept modern and safe. We believe that town roads must not be taken for granted and that our leaders must focus on upkeep and improvement of our environment and byways.

We are fortunate to have an enviable location within the state for corporate development. A tax base containing a well designed, attractive and fully utilized Southbury Corporate Park will stabilize our community for decades. We believe that any development of the Park must adhere to the highest standards of environmental responsibility.

We happily embrace our past continuing relationship with the Southbury Training School and acknowledge the important human services provided on its campus. Contained within our community are over 1800 acres of forest and farmland associated with the School. We support the Training School as an integral component of the economic vitality and the open space character of Southbury. While our Town leaders should be proactive in  thinking about the future of the School, sensitivity and respect for its historical roles are in order.

Our Commitment to Our State and National Platforms

As Democrats we support the principles of the Connecticut (www.ctdems.org) and National Parties (www.democrats.org)
