For a Better Southbury

Wetlands are essential to our freshwater supply.  They limit flooding by absorbing excess water during storms and then clean and release it as groundwater in dryer times.  Loss of wetlands has a negative impact on lakes and streams as well as the water flowing from our taps.  The greatest risk posed to Southbury’s water resources does not come from large “point source” polluters but rather from our land use.  With less and less prime space available there becomes increased pressure to develop in environmentally sensitive areas.  As responsible stewards we must make certain that our land use does not compromise irreplaceable wetlands insuring an ample supply of clean freshwater to meet the needs of our growing town.
